Most hockey players who weren't chosen for last Sunday's NHL All-Star Game used the break to take a vacation. Not David Backes, the captain of the St. Louis Blues.
David is working on getting his pilot's license . . . and he spent the break flying 700 miles, with an instructor, to Houston . . . to rescue three dogs.
David's wife Kelly is a board member at the Five Acres Animal Shelter in St. Louis, which is a no-kill shelter. They have an arrangement with Corridor Rescue, a Houston charity that rescues dogs from unsafe conditions.
Corridor Rescue came across three dogs: Lincoln, a lab mix . . . Emmett, a Border Collie / chow mix . . . and Ernie, a Rottweiler/shepherd mix. Five Acres happened to have three spots available.
So David flew to Houston and brought the dogs back to Five Acres in St. Louis. They'll be up for adoption next week.
